Cryptocurrency is a useful tool for solving process issues and conducting transactions within enterprises. Its record-keeping and self-auditing capabilities make it highly valuable to many industries—and individuals. Some authorities believe cryptocurrency is used primarily for nefarious purposes, but that has not stopped both private entities and the public from adopting it at increasing rates. This presents unique opportunities for cybersecurity professionals, whose jobs are to prevent crypto-related breaches. “This is kind of job security,” says security expert Dustin Brewer in the “The State of Cryptocurrency” episode of the ISACA® Podcast. “If all money is all of a sudden 1s and 0s, then our jobs are to audit and secure that.”
In the podcast, Brewer, alongside security professional Frank Downs, explores the history of cryptocurrency, beginning with the conception of blockchain technology in the 1990s all the way up to its more recent role in buying non-fungible tokens (NFTs). “You are seeing this adoption in nontraditional ways, and it is growing—not just the things that are purchased with it, but the problems that are solved with it,” says Downs. “How do you get the value out of that? I think that cryptocurrency and its affiliated tech are trying to address that issue.”
